La Réunion (French island) banned swimming and surfing after a succession of fatal shark attacks. Among the investigated solutions to reopen beaches, the installation of shark barrier nets is considered. However, experience shows that these nets are too costly to maintain due to damage caused by cyclic wave action. Fatigue has been suspected as the primary cause of failure.
This internship aims to improve the existing solutions in the sense of designing resistant nets with lower maintenance costs. The fatigue life of the nets will be defined and determined then a new optimum design of the net should be investigated.
This 5-6 months internship will be under the co-tutorship of Le Centre de Sécurité Requin and the University of La Réunion.
This internship should lead to a continuation with doctoral study (PhD).
